What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder is an inflammatory condition that causes adhesions of the joint capsule creating stiffness, loss of range of motion, and pain in the shoulder
How Does Frozen Shoulder Happen?
Frozen shoulder generally has three stages:
- Freezing Stage. During this stage the shoulder begins to become painful and feels stiff when moving. The pain is generally worse at night. This stage can last 6 weeks to 9 months.
- Frozen Stage. Limitation of range of motion continues to occur, pain intensity will lessen. Can last from 4 to 12 months.
- Thawing Stage. Gradual return of mobility of the shoulder. Can last from 6 months to 2 years.
Risk Factors
- Age > 40 years old
- More common in females
- Immobility
- Diabetes
- Thyroid disorders
- Cardiovascular disease
- Parkinson’s disease
Treatment Options
- Physical therapy
- NSAID’s and pain medications
- Cortisone injection
