What is a Shoulder Fracture?
A fracture is the same as a broken bone. The severity of fractures can vary, as a bone can be either completely or partially fractured.
Types of Shoulder Fractures
- Clavicle Fracture. The clavicle is more commonly referred to as the collarbone, which is the long and thin bone located at the base of the neck. This is the most common type of shoulder fracture, which generally occurs due to some type of fall or other trauma.
- Humerus Fracture. The humerus is the upper arm bone, running from your shoulder down to the elbow. Generally the proximal, or upper end, of the bone is fractured near the shoulder joint itself. This type of fracture is more common in individuals who are 65 years or older.
- Scapula Fracture. The scapula is more commonly referred to as the shoulder blade, the flat bone that lies on the upper back. This is the most rare case of a shoulder fracture. It can occur from a motor vehicle accident or a far fall.
